A abertura da cerimônia marcou o retorno de Britney Spears, que entregou um medley de seus maiores sucessos e recebeu o Millenium Award por todo seu legado na música pop – surpreendo com sua boa forma e muta coreografia. Entre as apresentações, quem também se destacou foi P!nk, com o single “Just Like Fire” (do filme “Alice Através do Espelho”), Rihanna e a balada R&B “Love On The Brain”, o dueto apaixonado de Gwen Stefani e Blake Shelton e uma performance memorável de Celine Dion – honrada com o Icon Award. Envolvida em problemas com sua gravadora, Kesha também se apresentou, emocionando a todos com um belíssimo cover de “It Ain’t Me Babe” de Bob Dylan. Para encerrar a noite, Madonna e Stevie Wonder fizeram um tributo a Prince.
